Thinking that the past should’ve been different Thinking that the past should’ve been different is a fight with reality I can never win. Whenever I try, it feels like I’m trying to breathe underwater. I have always known I can’t breathe underwater, but somehow I kept trying, getting angry at the water for not letting me breathe, getting angry at myself for not being able to breathe… All the spiritual ideas of “all things work together for good” and, “all things happen for a reason”, I know to be true, but the ego always tried to persuade me with exceptions to those rules. “Yes but” or “but if only…” I can see that the moment I realized that I am truly doing this all to myself and that no one is holding my head under water but me, is when I saw the insaneness of it all. Why would I keep trying to breathe underwater? Why would I keep blaming others and giving my power away when it is really me that is holding my own head underwater?! So I decided to stop and swim back up into the light. Open my eyes. Inhale love. Exhale regret. Inhale forgiveness. Exhale grievances. Inhale this present moment. Exhale the past. Inhale. Exhale. Nothing needed to be different for me to be happy right now. No one needed to treat me differently for me to be happy right now. I do not forgive the truth, because what is true is perfect love and has no need of forgiveness. So I forgive my illusions. I forgive myself for ever believing I could’ve been something else but perfect love. And all and everything has played their part perfectly, absolutely perfectly, to help me get there. And if you are reading this and you recognize yourself in this; Know it is okay to forget for a moment and jump back in trying to breathe underwater again. Be kind with your own journey. It is okay to fall down. It is okay to forget. It is okay to not be okay. There will always come a moment again where you’ll remember that no one is asking you to breathe underwater. The past is over. You are here now. Not a minute too late. Right on time in exactly the right place. No mistakes.
